In 2010, after 100 years of serving the local community in Anfield, Mitchell’s Bakery closed its doors. The closure was due to Liverpool FC’s stadium expansion which saw hundreds of homes in the area cleared for demolition and the dissipation of the local community.
However, with the help of artist Jeanne van Heeswijk and 2Up 2Down, an initiative that enabled the local community to take matters into their own hands, Mitchell’s Bakery was reopened as a social enterprise.
Today, Mitchell’s Bakery is known as Homebaked Anfield and after a successful crowdfunding campaign to purchase a commercial oven, Homebaked is a thriving community-led co-operatve bakery and Community Land Trust in the heart of North Liverpool.
This is their story.
